Pockets, flaps, handles “n” straps – The Felted Handbag with Sharon Costello (Saturday, 6 hours)

Proficiency Level: All

This workshop will teach students a range of techniques for creating complex, seamless felt bags. We will learn how to design a pattern for a bag with multiple pockets and compartments. We will make sturdy straps or handles felted right into the bag. We will even design felt closures to finish off our one-of-a kind bags.

Go-Felt-A-Fish” with Sharon Costello (Sunday, 3 hours)

Proficiency Level: All

A fun, “everything goes” approach to teaching surface design in felt. Students will learn all about creating surface design in the felting process while creating a one-of-a- kind, three dimensional fiber fish that can be used as a small bag, or hanging art piece. We will combine wool, shear fabrics, silks and synthetic fibers, designer yarns, wool locks and beads to create fantasy fish full of texture and shine!. This class will include mostly wet felting techniques.

"Tablet Weaving for Beginners" with Inge Dam (Saturday, 6 hours)

Proficiency Level: All

The workshop will introduce the participants to the versatility of tablet weaving and how it can be applied into finished projects or as embellishments on woven items. The participants will learn the history of tablet weaving and become familiar with the tools and the best yarn to use for specific projects. The students will learn the difference between threading defined patterns and turning defined patterns. One warp will be made using a threading defined pattern. Another warp will be made using a 10 minute warping technique called "continuous warping". This warp will be used for a turning defined pattern. On that warp the students will learn regular double-faced tablet weaving. Participants will learn how to design original patterns and how to use these patterns to weave motifs in a band. Several samples will be available for inspiration.

"Introduction to Tablet Weaving " with Inge Dam (Sunday, 3 hours)

Proficiency Level: All

In this workshop the participants will be introduced to the versatility of tablet weaving and how it can be applied into finished projects or as embellishments on woven items. They will become familiar with the tools and the best yarn to use for specific projects. The students will learn the tablet weaving technique threading defined patterns. They will learn how to make a warp and how to thread the tablets. They will make a warp and weave a small project

"Yarn & Fiber Basket" with Debbie Knelly (Saturday, 6 hours)

Proficiency Level: All

Generously sized at 22”x14” and 8” deep, this market basket is perfect for carrying your current project or use it to display your lovely yarn and fiber. It features a filled woven bottom, no holes, a fancy rimming technique and a comfortable carry handle. After weaving, embellish it with a crocheted doily and ribbon if you like. This market basket is simple enough for beginners, yet challenging enough for the more experienced weaver.

"Spinning Wheel Tool Basket" with Debbie (Sunday, 3 hours)

Proficiency Level: All

Great little basket to hang from your spinning wheel to keep all your tools handy. This wooden bottom basket is woven with flat reed and rimmed with a wire embellishment from which it hangs, or just weave a loop. Personalize it by customizing it with your handspun, roving, feathers, beads or just leave it plain. This basket can also be used to hold pens & pencils, liquid soap, crochet hooks and so much more.

"Spin a Perfect Sock Yarn" with Judith McKenzie McCuin (Saturday, 6 hours)

Proficiency Level: Should be able to make a continuous thread

The only thing nicer than hand knit socks are socks knit with handspun yarn. Learn what it takes to spin a perfect sock yarn. We will cover fiber choice, fiber blends and how to process them into long wearing, comfortable and attractive socks. You will learn about the type of spinning and plying necessary to make a good sock yarn.

"Creating Tweed Yarn " with Judith McKenzie McCuin (Sunday, 3 hours)

Proficiency Level: Should be able to make a continuous thread

Tweed is created by blending elements of texture or color, or both. Learn to blend fibers to produce the qualities needed to spin and create a beautiful tweed yarn. Tweed can be made with small amounts of an assortment of fibers to give a rough , irregular, yet soft and flexible hand when turned into fabric.

"Popular Wheel Mechanics" with Judith McKenzie McCuin (special Friday session, 3 hours)

Proficiency Level: Should be able to make a continuous thread

Mechanics: Teaching your wheel to produce the yarn you want. In this seminar, students will learn how to adapt their wheel to spin to the diameter they want, not the diameter the wheel will let them have. We will also learn how to adjust the wheel to get the twist per inch you need by adjusting the wheel and not the spinner. We’ll look at how wheels are designed and how to get them to work to their maximum. We’ll learn about drive bands, lead cords, different whorls and how and when to use scotch tension or double drive. We’ll also learn how to reward our wheels for good behavior with proper oil and maintenance.

"Creative Knitting Estonian Style" with Merike Saarniit (Saturday, 6 hours)

Proficiency Level: Adventuresome Intermediate

How does such a tiny country (about double the size of NJ) have such a vast variety of knitting stitches and styles? Learn how this happened while sampling a variety of traditionally popular texture stitches (including elongated, patent, nupps, braids and others). We'll work them flat, in a sampler format (separated by simple garter ridges) that, in the end, can be transformed into quite the stunning hat.

"Microwave Rainbow Dyeing" with Merike Saarniit (Sunday, 3 hours)

Proficiency Level: All

Painting yarns and fibers can provide you with exactly the colorways you want. You'll have fun learning how to do so with a minimum of fuss and mess with a microwave oven, SAFELY and effectively. We'll cover some color theory, hints and tips on how to avoid "mud", experimenting with painting random and specific color repeats, and how to ensure painting large batches consistently for personal projects or production. No chemistry degree required for this class!

"Cotton the Last Great Frontier" with Patsy Zawistoski (Saturday, 6 hours)

Proficiency Level: Intermediate

Don't feel intimidated by cotton anymore. Understand how to prepare your wheel, and prepare a wide variety of cotton fibers. Several samples of cotton fiber preparations, including un-ginned fiber, ginned lint, and new natural color slivers are included in the workshop. Hands on activities include ginning, carding, preparing punis, spinning samples and finishing, choosing, dyeing and using cotton yarns will be discussed.

"Spinning Fine Wool Yarns" with Patsy Zawistoski (Sunday, 3 hours)

Proficiency Level: Intermediate

Do you look longingly at other spinners super fine yarns and wonder how they are created? Learn the secrets of fine spinning, and then plan to create that special shawl or scarf from spider weight yarns that you spun yourself. This class, geared for intermediate spinners, will start you on your way. We will work with the rovings, merino locks, and Optim TM stretched wool. We will practice scouring locks, combing and spinning with a worsted draw to achieve those superfine lightweight yarns.
